A Slice of Support: Why Community Matters at Sponge
Cake creates connection, conversation, and community. This Mental Health Awareness Week, Sponge is sharing over 1,000 slices of cake across Norfolk to help bring people together.
At Sponge, we believe cake is about so much more than what’s inside the box. Of course, we love baking delicious cakes, brownies, and treats, but what we love even more is what happens when people gather around them. Cake has a unique way of creating moments of connection, encouraging conversation, and turning ordinary days into something a little brighter. That’s why we're proud to support Mental Health Awareness Week by partnering with Norfolk and Waveney Mind and donating more than 1,000 slices of cake to community events and wellbeing hubs across Norfolk.
Why Community Matters
This year's Mental Health Awareness Week theme is community — something that sits at the heart of everything we do.Community isn't just about where we live. It's about the people who support us, listen to us, and help us feel connected. Whether that's family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, or local organisations, those connections can make a huge difference to our wellbeing. Mental health challenges affect millions of people every year. In England, around one in four people will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives. Behind every statistic is a real person who may need support, understanding, and connection. We believe even small acts of kindness can have a positive impact.
Sharing Cake Across Norfolk
Throughout Mental Health Awareness Week, Sponge will be donating slices of cake to Norfolk and Waveney Mind events and REST Community Wellbeing Hubs, helping to create welcoming spaces where people can come together. Our cake donations will support: Norfolk Bluebell Wood Burial Park Open Day, Stody Classic Car Show, REST Community Wellbeing Hubs across Norfolk
Whether it's a slice of Victoria Sponge Cake, a piece of Chocolate Cake, or another Sponge favourite, every slice is an invitation to pause, chat, and connect.
Why Cake?
Because cake brings people together. A shared slice of cake can spark a conversation, create a moment of comfort, or simply encourage someone to sit down and take a break. Sometimes the simplest gestures can make the biggest difference. At community events and wellbeing hubs, cake becomes more than a treat. It becomes a reason to gather, share stories, and feel part of something bigger. That's exactly why we do what we do.
Community Is Part of Our DNA
As a Norfolk-based business, we're passionate about supporting the communities around us. From our range of whole cakes, brownies by post, vegan cakes, gluten-free cakes, and Cake Cards, everything we create is designed to help people celebrate, connect, and share meaningful moments. Supporting organisations like Norfolk and Waveney Mind allows us to extend that mission beyond birthdays and celebrations, helping to create opportunities for connection when people need it most.
More Than Just Cake
This Mental Health Awareness Week, we're proud to play a small part in helping people feel seen, supported, and connected because while we're passionate about baking great cake, we're even more passionate about the moments it creates. If sharing a slice of cake can help start a conversation, spark a smile, or make someone feel a little less alone, then that's something worth celebrating.
