Sparking Joy: A Conversation with Bakers & Larners' Henry Baker

Sparking Joy is our series celebrating the people in our community and the simple things that make them smile, create, laugh, and connect.

In our hometown of Holt, we're lucky to be surrounded by incredible independent businesses, each bringing something special to the town. One of those is Bakers & Larners of Holt, a luxury department store that's been part of Norfolk life for an astonishing 255 years.

If you've never visited, imagine the department store of your childhood. Full of character, history, and little surprises around every corner. From fashion and homewares to gardening, gifts, and one of the most impressive Food Halls in Norfolk, it's a place where you can happily lose an afternoon. We sat down with Henry Baker, Head of Business Development and ninth-generation family member, to talk about heritage, community, Christmas in Holt, and of course, cake.

Keeping 255 Years of History Alive

One of the biggest misconceptions about working in a family business that's lasted for centuries, Henry tells us, is that it somehow becomes easier. "There's no doubt we've benefited from the incredible work of the generations before us, but you still have to keep moving with the times. We can't rest on our laurels." It's a philosophy that's clearly worked. While retail has changed dramatically, Bakers & Larners has continued to evolve while staying true to its roots.

The Secret Ingredient

In a world dominated by online shopping and retail giants, what keeps customers coming back? For Henry, the answer is simple: people. "Our staff are the jewel in the crown. We have team members who've worked here for over 25 years, some much longer. Customers come back because of the experience and the friendly faces they see when they walk through the door." It's this commitment to service that has earned Bakers & Larners the nickname "The Harrods of Norfolk" — a title Henry accepts with pride, while remaining focused on the customer experience that made it possible.

More Than a Business

As a ninth-generation family member, Henry feels a deep responsibility to protect the legacy built by those who came before him. "This isn't just a job, it's a lifestyle. We always think about protecting what previous generations created and making sure we're handing something meaningful on to the next generation." That sense of stewardship runs through everything the business does, from supporting local suppliers to helping maintain Holt's unique character as a thriving independent shopping destination.

The Heart of Holt

When asked where he'd send a visitor with only an hour to spend in Holt, Henry doesn't point them towards Bakers & Larners. Instead, he recommends exploring the town's hidden shopping yards. "They're full of independent businesses, artisans, specialists and makers. There's always something new to discover. We all support each other here, and that's part of what makes Holt special." It's a lovely reminder that community isn't about competition; it's about collaboration.

Food Hall Favourites

While Bakers & Larners is famous for many things, their award-winning Food Hall remains a particular point of pride. And if Henry had to choose one thing to travel for? "The local cheese, easily." With an 18-metre delicatessen counter packed with local and international produce, it's easy to see why. Their famous Christmas hampers are another customer favourite, filled with carefully sourced products and tailored to suit every taste, making them a festive tradition for many Norfolk families.

A Celebrity Guest?

After welcoming countless visitors through the doors over the years, we asked Henry which celebrity he'd most like to see shopping in the store. His answer came quickly: "Keith Floyd." A fan of good food, great wine, and quality kitchenware, Henry thinks the legendary chef would feel right at home browsing the Food Hall and wine cellar.

The Most Important Question: What Cake Would Bakers & Larners Be?

Naturally, we couldn't finish without asking the question that really matters. If Bakers & Larners were a Sponge cake, what flavour would it be?"Victoria Sponge Cake. It's traditional, it's a family favourite, and it pleases most people. A classic for a reason."We couldn't have put it better ourselves.

A Slice of Holt History

Stepping into Bakers & Larners feels a little like slicing into a Victoria Sponge Cake. Familiar, comforting, and full of character. After speaking with Henry, it's clear the magic isn't just found in the Food Hall, the famous hampers, or even the 18-metre cheese counter. It's found in the people, the history, and the commitment to community that has carried the business through ten monarchs, nine generations, and more than two centuries of change.Like any great sponge cake, the recipe is simple: family, community, tradition, and a little bit of joy in every layer.
